The stories contained in this little volume under the title of “Totem Tales” are the result of careful study and research among various tribes of Indians of the Northwestern Pacific Coast.
The Indian peculiarity of narration is kept as nearly as possible, consistent with an understandable translation from the native tongue into English.....They are a very superstitious people and have signs, charms, and incantations for everything. Magic plays an important part in every Indian's life....
Some of the stories contained in this volume were told to the author by the side of the campfire in the great forest of the far Northwest, others were obtained from “squaw men” who had married into the tribe and were familiar with the tales, others were gathered from men of long residence in the NW, who had heard them from the old Indian story-tellers, characters who are fast vanishing with civilization.....DEMONS..FAIRIES...GHOST STORIES. The legends account for....creation...the reason for the world being as it is today.

very good  for its age-
text and boards very secure, but the front cover is a little slack. Pages generally very clean -very few small spots and dirty ffep.  1 small rip that I saw -repaired with doc. tape. Gilt a bit faded. Tips and cover edges [mostly the top] lightly worn. Back cover has some discoloration.
9/10 for its age

-this book is very old and may have accumulated bad smells along the way [musty basement/ mildew/ smoke] - I have found that dryer sheets in them for a few months makes a world of difference! some of my books get sold right away so please consider using this trick before deciding to return it!  As far as I can tell -this book has no bad smell.
