LEGEND MYTH OF TOM THUMB
This legendary midget, known as King Arthur's dwarf,
was first written about almost 400 years ago, when he was
listed in Discoverie of Witchcraft, 1584. His adventures
have been popular on page and screen ever since. He fell
into a pudding, was eaten by a cow, carried off by a raven
and swallowed by a giant.
In fact, the English Tom Thumb is typical of folk tale
midgets in many languages from Hop o'My Thumb to
Issun Boshi (Little One Inch) in Japan.
A real American midget, Charles S. Stratton, adopted
the name General Tom Thumb for his appearances with
Barnums Circusin 1842. He was 35 inches tall and married
a bride 3 inches shorter in New York in 1863.
